Rien ne va plus pour les casinos de Macao

Le Campanile, le Rialto, le Grand Canal et même des canotiers en gondole: le casino Venetian condense tous les clichés de Venise sur 1 million de m2, à Macao. Le complexe titanesque boit la tasse depuis quelques mois. Et il n’est pas le seul. Faites vos jeux, rien ne va plus à Macao!

Des machines à sous à Macao

En ce dimanche après-midi, trois couples de mariés posent sur fond Renaissance italienne. Ils sont parmi les rares curieux à s’aventurer à l’extérieur du Venetian. Non pas que l’architecture ronflante intéresse peu de monde, mais le spectacle est à l’intérieur.

Il faut voir les joueurs agglutinées autour des tables de jeu ou la procession de visiteurs le long des rues d’une Venise copie-conforme sous un ciel bleu artificiel. Un peu plus loin, les gondoliers conduisent les amoureux près du pont des Soupirs. Mais ils ne sont plus vraiment d’humeur à chanter.

En décembre, le plus grand casino au monde a mis à la porte 500 personnes, dont la moitié de ses gondoliers, et réduit le temps de travail de 1 000 autres collaborateurs. “J’ai peur que ce ne soit qu’une première étape. Les gens craignent pour leur boulot ici”, glisse un employé de la sécurité qui a échappé aux coupes.

La folie des grandeurs du groupe Las Vegas Sands, propriétaires du Venetian et de deux autres casinos à Macao, se heurte à la crise financière en Asie et aux Etats-Unis depuis plusieurs mois. Comme d’autres leaders mondiaux de l’industrie du jeu, ces Américains ont perdu des plumes.

Tellement de plumes qu’ils ont été forcés de suspendre leurs projets dans l’ancienne colonie portugaise. Sheldon Adelson, le patron du groupe, a décidé de reconsidérer les 4 milliards d’euros d’investissements prévus dans la zone de Cotai.

Des restrictions de visas pour les joueurs de Chine continentale

Sur cette bande de terre de 1,2 km de long, concentration de casinos et d’hôtels rivalisant de démesure, nombre de chantiers sont au point mort ou ont ralenti la cadence. A 500 mètres du Venetian, les grues annonçant le monumental Galaxy tournent au ralenti. La première phase qui accouchera d’un casino et de trois hôtels, ne sera pas achevée avant 2010, comme prévu initialement. Et à l’instar de Las Vegas Sands et de Melco Crown, Galaxy a aussi dû tailler dans les salaires et recourir aux congés non payés.

Une décision du gouvernement chinois a achevé de plomber l’ambiance sur le territoire. L’an passé, Pékin a décidé de limiter à une fois tous les trois mois -plutôt que tous les deux mois- le nombre de visites de ses ressortissants, via de nouvelles restrictions de visas.

En outre, ils ne peuvent plus se rendre à Hong Kong et Macao avec le même visa. Un coup dur si l’on sait que deux tiers des joueurs à Macao proviennent de Chine…. Les casinos ont déjà fermé à la fin de l’an passé 300 des 4 300 tables de jeu de la ville et 1000 des 12 800 machines à sous.

Dépense moyenne par joueur au Ponte16 : 4,6 euros par joueur

Les Chinois ne désertent pas pour autant les tables de jeu. Que ce soit au Venetian ou au Ponte 16. Dans ce casino flanqué d’un hôtel cinq-étoiles près du quartier historique, ses 105 tables de jeu et 300 machines à sous attirent les joueurs par grappes. Peut-être l’effet “nouveauté”: il est l’un des derniers à avoir ouvert, il y a un an.

“Pour l’instant, nous nous portons bien. Plus de 70% des clients de l’hôtel jouent”, assure James Un, le manager du casino. Un masque de confiance, à entendre Sharon Wong, la manager de l’hôtel Sofitel, logé dans le casino: “Pour l’instant, ça va, mais on s’attend à subir des difficultés cette année”.

A l’intérieur du Ponte 16, Yew, un Chinois de 38 ans, foule le sol marbré pour la première fois. Et peut-être la dernière:

    “Ce casino ne m’a pas vraiment plu. En plus, j’ai perdu 400 patacas [37 euros, ndlr] ce soir au carribean stud. Mais ce n’est pas grave, j’ai connu des soirées plus noires.”

Yew est un habitué de Macao, ou plutôt était. Il y vient trois à quatre fois par an pour jouer. “Mais je vais devoir limiter mes séjours avec ces restrictions”, reconnaît-t-il.

Un peu plus loin, un couple taïwanais avoue être venu d’abord pour en prendre plein la vue. “On a joué un peu, pour essayer”, ajoute-t-il. Comme beaucoup de visiteurs, ils ont misé de petites sommes. Au Ponte16, la dépense moyenne est de 4,6 euros par joueur.

Moins de gros flambeurs autour des tables VIP

Ce ne sont pas les nombreux petits joueurs qui font la fortune des casinos, mais les gros flambeurs des salles privées. Ils fournissent près de 70% de leurs recettes. Chris Armstrong, senior consultant chez Judd Farris, société de construction et de biens immobiliers pour l’Asie, à Hong-Kong, observe:

    “Je crois que le problème principal n’est pas une question de nombre de joueurs, mais du type de joueurs qui ne vient plus. De nombreux grands casinos dépendent de ces gros joueurs qui jouent de grosses sommes. S’ils cessent de venir, les revenus vont chuter fortement.”

Et il y a déjà moins d’argent sur les tables. Le revenu du baccarat VIP, première ressource des casinos, a dégringolé de 2,9 à 2,1 milliards de francs durant l’année 2008.

Les observateurs du marché prédisent une année sombre à l’industrie du jeu. Ainsi, David O’Rear, chef économiste de la Chambre générale de Hong Kong:

    “Les casinos ont construit énormément en peu de temps, en tablant sur le fait que les visiteurs de Chine seraient autorisés à venir de manière illimitée. Ce modèle n’est plus valable. Plusieurs casinos risquent la faillite, si ça continue.”

Dans la capitale mondiale du jeu, on doit déjà prendre les paris…

Best iPhone apps for a creative designer?

First of all, I’d like to take some precautions here…

Generally I don’t like the “Best of” anything on the web because it’s never accurate to me. What is great for an accountant may not be suitable for a designer, and vice versa. This is why I will try to create a “Best of” for people like me, designers, geeks, creative. We should share some interests… That is the first point.

Then, you have to understand that is MY point of view, MY best of to me myself and I. I just share what I like here. You may think this app is crap and/or doesn’t work on your iPhone; I’m not an IT person; ask to the developer who did it, I can’t help you. Sorry.

Then there is the date. Important the date; there maybe an upgrade for the app I’m talking about in 2 days and I don’t know it yet, should I be insulted and beaten to death for that? Well, maybe : (

First I bought AIRSHARING, thinking that if you have to pay for it, it must be because it’s good. I was wrong; and someone in Friendfeed told me so. Thanks a lot guy! I have to tell you that I’m a total newbie; just download and install and it has to work, that is my goal.

AIRSHARING was, in that way a bit complicated to me, this IP thing you have to search, blah blah, boring.

With DISCOVER, you start the application, and you see all your iPhone files instantly in your browser: magic. Then you just have to drag and drop! That is perfect for me!

Go and get it.

Now, a little part on the GTD things, because you just have to Get your Things Done buddies! As you are certainly a big manager with dozen of tasks per hour, these apps will help you to organize them, in a nifty way.

This one is quite “original” if you speak Texan (I’m jokiiing!), well it’s in English, so the poor French like me must choose the right “accent” before using it. I guess you won’t have this problem.

So, REQALL is a nice GTD app as you guessed, you just have to speak and say your tasks and it will be translated and transformed into text with the right date and all! Wow. This is good voice recognition here.

That’s it. For example, you are in your Jaguar and you forgot to tell to your mistress to wear this… Ok. I’m done here. Find your own tasks.

Evernote is a FANTASTIC tool I’m using for everything, it is connected with my desktop application so you just have to Sync and you will have the same documents on your iPhone, your Mac desktop and on the net. Very beautiful end useful.

This is why I couldn’t choose between all these apps for my tasks, they are all so good now!

Now, let’s be serious. Noise and Beatmaker (see below) are the best apps I ever seen on the iPhone (for now on), I’m totally addicted.

I would say most stunning design, technically perfect, very joyful and amazing possibilities. + you can show off in front of your friends that only have Free Piano. Then when you will connect the iPhone to your 1500W speakers your neighbors will be very happy to share ideas on music with you.

But careful, you have to be a bit “musician” to understand all the possibilities you have here, otherwise you may be a bit lost at the beginning with the choice offer…

Ok, maybe you won’t be Timbaland tomorrow. But who knows? In case I give you the idea to buy Beatmaker and you become famous, don’t forget to pay me back (at least 48% of your total revenue). It can happen with this app because it has all you need to create the future worldwide hit. And it’s this kind of app that if you are bored, you can always return to it and enjoy to create a new… Hit. (let’s pretending).

The maximum of pleasure come when you connect your iPhone (again??) to your Mac in using GarageBand… Infinite possibilities, the Ali-Baba cave.

For now, I really think Beatmaker and Noise.io are the best music/game app on iPhone. All this technology in so tiny space! Congrats to the Dev. people…
